Key Takeaways Students benefit from in-person learning, and safely returning to in-person instruction in the fall 2021 is a priority. Vaccination is currently the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Promoting vaccination can help schools safely return to in-person learning as well as extracurricular activities and sports. Masks should be worn indoors by all individuals (age 2 and older) who are not fully vaccinated. Consistent and correct mask use by people who are not fully vaccinated is especially important indoors and in crowded settings, when physical distancing cannot be maintained. CDC recommends schools ma…

Introduction COVID-19 will be with us for the foreseeable future and its impact on international schools will continue. The virus itself is evolving, the science related to the virus, to vaccines, and to testing is also evolving. Although the pandemic is global, mitigation of the impact of the virus needs to be managed at a school and local level. A current understanding of the situation with the virus will enable schools to implement up to date mitigation strategies. These strategies should incorporate vaccinations, screening, process and procedures as well as communications. Our Panel on April 15th included: Dr David Teo – Regional Medical Director…

Schools around the world are looking to get back to a pre-COVID operating environment. No one is sure how that environment may look, but one thing is for certain, schools will once again face the same kinds of threats and hazards they have always encountered. To overcome these threats, hazards and other disruptions, schools will need to be prepared with an emergency action plan, or better yet, a robust Emergency Planning Management (emergency preparedness) program. Planning > Training > Practice Emergency Planning Management for schools consists of seven components or phases and should be continuous and ongoing, so all school stakehol…

13 Nov 2020 Corona pool tests in schools: successful pilot project by BIS and SYNLAB The Bavarian International School (BIS) and the Augsburg-based laboratory diagnostics company SYNLAB have successfully completed a three-week pilot project phase. The aim of the cooperation was to demonstrate that larger school cohorts can be systematically screened using simple, fast and painless corona tests via gargling procedures and saliva spit pools, thus enabling the early detection of Covid-19 infection clusters, the identification of highly infectious individuals and the focused and selective quarantine of appropriate school cohorts. A saliva sp…

All schools, regardless of their size, grade configuration or location should have an Emergency Operations Plan (some schools may use the term Emergency Action Plan or Crisis Management Plan) that provides a structure to document the school’s emergency planning, training, and support activities. While a written plan is often required for accreditation or regulatory purposes, the process is more important than writing the plan as the traditional written plan usually sits in a binder or folder and would never be pulled out in the middle of an imminent threat response. https://clearpathepm.com/blog/how-should-a-schools-emergency-operations-plan-change-during-a-pand…

Round Table Discussion - Access Controls in COVID-19
by Kevin Lloyd- 0 replies

Access Controls Traditionally, access control refers to the practice of restricting entrance to a property, a building, or a room to authorized persons. Physical access controls can be achieved by a human (a guard or receptionist), through mechanical means such as locks and keys, or through technological means such as access control systems like smart card readers. Access controls are usually implemented based on policies and together facilitate approved access to a facility. Prior to COVID-19 schools would deploy a robust access control system to mitigate threats – criminal activity, child protection, child custody issues, etc. Now schools will need to deploy …

Will you implement mandatory temperature testing / reporting for students to access the school?

Some schools are mandating temperature testing at the school’s access point or having parents provide a daily submission of their children’s temperature. How would this be done? Will you provide proper training and personal protective equipment if you mandate that temperatures are taken at the entrance? What labour laws exist related to this work? What does this mean for privacy laws or GDPR if the parents are submitting daily temperature? Schools must adhere to governmental regulations. (for example, health record protection or disability laws may apply when submitting temperatures).
